It is my understanding that most high sec dwellers slap the term pirate on to any person that lives in low sec. They are scared of low sec, because it is filled to the brim with dirty, nasty pirates. In my opinion, this could not be further from the truth.
Firstly, low sec is pretty damn empty. Secondly, most of the combat I believe occurs in low sec is between parties who both are looking for and wanting fights. I don't call these people pirates. They are combat pilots, looking to test their mettle or fight for control of certain systems. When I was in a low sec corp doing small gang PvP, we mainly engaged in PvP to keep control of our area and as a show of force. We had a level 4 agent in our home system that we ran missions for, and other corps wanted to use that agent too. Engaging in PvP was never about making money, but defending our means to make money or just have some fun.
A pirate kills to make money, and will only attack if the enemy has little to no chance of being able to fight back. I have no issue whatsoever in attacking anyone that I know I will kill and has a chance of making me some nice isk. Hence why I like going after explorers, they are easy kills and have the chance of dropping some nice loot.
My killboard may be growing in terms of number of kills, but it is by no means impressive. No impressive kills of bad ass combat ships will be found in any of my recent kills. I don't care though. I don't blow people up for the prestige, I do it for the isk(and for the hunt). That is what a true pirate does.
